Do AI Books Actually Sell on KDP? Real Data From 350 Books

Short answer: yes — but almost nobody tells you the uncomfortable part. Here's what 350+ published books and €18,000 in 6 months actually looks like, so you can decide with data instead of hype.

The honest one-line answer: AI books sell on KDP, but the money comes from a catalog, not from any single title. Most books earn little; a minority carry the whole account.

The real numbers

Across my pen name's catalog of 350+ AI-assisted books, the account earned roughly €18,000 in 6 months. That's a real result — but the distribution is the lesson:

RealityWhat it means for you
A minority of titles drive most revenueRoughly the top ~20% of books carry ~80% of the earnings.
Most books earn little on their ownPlenty of titles make single-digit or low-double-digit euros lifetime.
Genre decides the ceiling7 sci-fi novels earned ~€84 total; 7 dark romance earned ~€1,092 — about 13× more for the same effort.
Cost per book is tiny~€4–8 to produce a complete book with AI, so the math survives a lot of misses.

That last row is why the model works: when a book costs a few euros to produce, you can afford the misses and let the winners pay for everything. A traditional ghostwriter (hundreds of euros per book) can't.

So why do most people fail?

Is it allowed?

Yes. Amazon KDP permits AI-assisted books as long as you disclose AI use at upload, edit for quality and originality, and follow content guidelines. The ban risk comes from spammy, unedited uploads — not from using AI responsibly.
